Separate an image into layers online — try the editor free
* Free to use — selecting, editing and every export run in your browser, and nothing is uploaded unless you start a step that says it will: the AI tools, background removal on its sharper engine (an in-browser engine is one click away under the same button), or upscaling a photograph (logos and flat artwork are enlarged on your device). A free account (Google, Apple or an emailed code — no card) is needed to download the finished file, and comes with credits for the server-side tools.
Open a JPG, PNG or WebP and try the local selection, cutting and colour tools without an account. See your layer stack before signing up. Every download needs a free account, including PNG, ZIP, ORA and PSD. Automatic server splitting is a separate, credit-based option; its cost is shown before you start.
Try the free editorWhat you can do without an account
Open your image, select an object with the brush, lasso or click-to-grab tool, and lift the selection onto its own layer. For flat artwork, Split by color groups matching colours into separate layers. Move, hide and refine those layers in the editor to check the result. These local editing tools are free without an account; saving a file requires free sign-in. Separating a flattened picture creates new layers from the visible pixels, not the original designer's lost source layers.
Local editing and file writing stay in your browser
Hand editing, colour splitting and file writing run on your device and do not upload your image pixels. Signing in and checking an export allowance still contact the account service. Server processing is a different step: automatic splitting and the metered AI tools send a working copy only after you start them. Background removal also offers a server engine and an in-browser engine. Check the tool's disclosure before starting if the picture must stay on your device.
A free account is required for all downloads
Sign in with Google, Apple or an emailed code; no payment card is required. Then download a layered PSD, an OpenRaster file, a ZIP of transparent PNG layers or a flattened PNG. ORA, PNG-stack ZIP and flattened PNG exports are free and unlimited after sign-in. A free account gets one layered PSD export a day; later PSD exports cost 3 credits each unless you have a subscription with unlimited PSD export. Files are written at the working canvas size without an added watermark.
Check the working size and the cuts
Signed out, the editor fits images to 8 megapixels. A free account removes that account-tier limit, although very large images may still be fitted to your device's memory budget. Review the working dimensions and each layer before export. Fine hair, small text and overlapping objects can need manual cleanup. A clean cut leaves transparency where pixels were lifted; rebuilding the hidden background is a separate, optional operation, not part of the cut.
Automatic splitting uses credits
The automatic server split requires an account and uses credits; it is not the free local colour separator. Metered AI options, including precision subject extraction and textured background fill, also show their credit cost before you run them. New accounts receive 6 signup credits with no card required. That is a starting allowance, not unlimited server processing, and some paid-engine options require purchased credits. You can continue using the local editing tools without spending credits.
Frequently asked
Can I separate an image into layers without signing up?
Yes, with the local selection, cutting and colour-separation tools. You can open an image, edit it and preview your layers without an account. Automatic server splitting requires sign-in and uses credits. Every download requires a free account.
Can I download without an account?
No. All downloads require a free account: PSD, ORA, PNG-stack ZIP and flattened PNG. Sign-in is free and does not require a payment card.
What is included with a free account?
Unlimited local editing, unlimited ORA, PNG-stack ZIP and flattened PNG downloads, one layered PSD export a day, and 6 signup credits. Later PSD exports cost 3 credits each for non-subscribers. Automatic server splitting and other metered AI options use credits at the cost shown before you start.
Is there a watermark?
No. Exports have no added watermark and keep the working canvas size. Check that size after import: signed-out editing has an 8-megapixel limit, and device memory can also limit very large images.
Can it recover the original layers from a JPG?
No. A flattened image no longer contains its original layer structure. You can create new, editable layers from the visible objects, colours and text, then inspect and refine the cuts before downloading.
